Practical, official starting points for a business at West Shoup Campus in Twin Falls: getting found, registering and permitting, utilities, and free help. Each office describes its own rules, so check its page before you act. Nothing here is legal advice.

Get found online

Use the same business name, and the same address with the suite number, everywhere your business appears. Google asks that a profile name reflect "your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers," and it takes a suite number as "Address Line 2." The suite matters here because several businesses share each building number, and delivery drivers and map apps need it to find the right door.

To ask the campus to add or correct your entry in this site's directory, email wattes7@gmail.com with your business name, building, suite and website.

Open or move a business in Twin Falls

The City of Twin Falls says all businesses need to register with the Idaho Secretary of State and that a business "may also need an Idaho Sales/Use Tax number." The Idaho State Tax Commission lays out the order: register the business and any assumed business names with the Secretary of State, get a federal Employer Identification Number from the IRS if you need one, then apply for state tax and employer permits through one Idaho Business Registration application.

Registering a business name does not create a legal entity and is not a business license. The state's business site notes that business licenses come from city or county clerks, and the City lists the kinds of business that need one on its business regulations page.

City permits, signs and inspections

The City's Building Safety Department says new commercial structures, remodels and additions need permits, that all electrical, plumbing, mechanical and gas work must be permitted, and that signs must be permitted. Its permitting staff also issue certificates of occupancy. Start with its permit requirements and its applications, forms and fees, and ask Building Safety before you start any work.

Planning and Zoning reviews building permit requests and recommends a project coordination meeting before you apply for a zoning permit. Contact Planning and Zoning to confirm your use is allowed in the Commercial district. The Twin Falls Fire Department conducts fire code inspections of local businesses, so ask the City which inspections apply to your suite.

Trade licenses

Some trades, such as barbering, cosmetology and massage therapy, need a state license. The Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) runs the licensing boards. Its Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board handles applications, renewals and license searches for that field, and its Board of Massage Therapy handles massage therapy.

For tattoo and piercing studios, the City's table of uses lists "Body Art Studio" as its own use, so ask Planning and Zoning what applies before you sign a lease. This site does not summarize body art rules.

Utilities and services

The City's parcel records list City water for all three parcels, and the City bills water and sewer service. The City's Utility Services page links electricity to Idaho Power and natural gas to Intermountain Gas. Ask the property contact, or the utility, which accounts your suite needs in its own name.

Free help for a small business

The Idaho Small Business Development Center offers "no-cost, confidential consulting and low-cost training," and its South Central Idaho office is at the College of Southern Idaho. SCORE offers free mentoring. The Twin Falls Area Chamber of Commerce lists membership benefits and local resources.
